Backderf, Derf. 2020. Kent State : Four Dead in Ohio. New York: Abrams ComicArts. "On May 4, 1970, the Ohio National Guard gunned down unarmed college students protesting the Vietnam War at Kent State University. In a deadly barrage of 67 shots, 4 students were killed and 9 shot and wounded. It was the day America turned guns on its own children - a shocking event burned into our national memory. A few days prior, 10-year-old Derf Backderf saw those same Guardsmen patrolling his nearby hometown, sent in by the governor to crush a trucker strike. Using the journalism skills he employed on 'My Friend Dahmer' and 'Trashed', Backderf has conducted extensive interviews and research to explore the lives of these four young people and the events of those four days in May, when the country seemed on the brink of tearing apart. 'Kent State: Four Dead in Ohio', which will be published in time for the 50th anniversary of the tragedy, is a moving and troubling story about the bitter price of dissent--as relevant today as it was in 1970" -- Provided by publisher.

Bolster, Paul. 2020. Saving the Georgia Coast : A Political History of the Coastal Marshlands Protection Act. A Wormsloe Foundation Nature Book. Athens: University of Georgia Press. "A broad-based coalition of conservative southern politicians, countercultural activists, environmental scientists, sportsmen, devout Christians, garden clubs in Atlanta, and others came together to push the Coastal Marshland[s] Protection Act of 1970 through the Georgia state legislature. The law was on a first-in-the-nation bill to save the marshes of the state from mining and aggressive development and was a political watershed which reflected the changing nature of the state and set a foundation that would lead to the thoughtful use of the state's coastal resources still relevant today. Led by St. Simons lawyer Reid Harris, the coalition backed an act that set up a permitting process to control development and protect 700,000 acres of marshland. That coalition did not survive for long. It was a magical moment in the history of conservation, when allies as diverse deeply conservative Governor Lester Maddox and an Atlanta hippie stood together. This study of a legislative initiative will look carefully at the details of the political environment, and the personalities of the state leaders and citizen advocates, that made the passage of this bill possible. Knowing the history of this policy cornerstone will be helpful to all who seek to resolve the conflicts between competing uses of environmental resources today"-- Provided by publisher.

Press, 2018. P. 132-172.   This article traces the history of the Appalachian Movement Press (AMP), from its birth in Huntington, West Virginia, at the end of 1969.  The founders, Tom Woodruff and Dannie Stewart sought to create an activist printing press that would serve as a radical, independent, regional press with the overall purpose of uplifting Appalachian people to self-determination.  Along with poet Don West, their alternative, grassroots, publishing outfit was designed to remedy the lack of historical understanding of Appalachian history by Appalachian themselves.

Laine, Evan Edward, and Project Muse. 2021. Arlen Specter: Scandals, Conspiracies, and Crisis in Focus. Book Collections on Project Muse. Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press. "From his early work as a lawyer on the Warren Commission investigating the assassination of President John F. Kennedy to his days as Philadelphia's district attorney to his thirty-year career as a United States Senator from Pennsylvania, Arlen Specter found himself consistently in the middle of major historical events. During his five terms as senator, Spector met with the likes of Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat and Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro and made significant contributions during the fallout of both the Iran-Contra scandal and the Clinton impeachment. His work had a profound influence on the configuration of the United States Supreme Court, the criminal justice system, LGBTQ rights, and stem cell research. Photographs from Specter's personal collection highlight many of these key moments, revealing the rich narrative not only of one man's political career, but how it helped shape a nation. While it will probably be long debated whether Specter's complex and controversial political legacy merits mainly praise or criticism, Arlen Specter sheds new light on the life of a man who fought to make a difference"-- Provided by publisher.

Leloudis, James L, and Robert Rodgers Korstad. 2020. Fragile Democracy : The Struggle Over Race and Voting Rights in North Carolina. Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press. "America is at war with itself over the right to vote, or, more precisely, over the question of who gets to exercise that right and under what circumstances. Conservatives speak in ominous tones of voter fraud so widespread that it threatens public trust in elected government. Progressives counter that fraud is rare and that calls for reforms such as voter ID are part of a campaign to shrink the electorate and exclude some citizens from the political life of the nation. North Carolina is a battleground for this debate, and its history can help us understand why--a century and a half after ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment--we remain a nation divided over the right to vote. In Fragile Democracy, James L. Leloudis and Robert R. Korstad tell the story of race and voting rights, from the end of the Civil War until the present day. They show that battles over the franchise have played out through cycles of emancipatory politics and conservative retrenchment. When race has been used as an instrument of exclusion from political life, the result has been a society in which vast numbers of Americans are denied the elements of meaningful freedom: a good job, a good education, good health, and a good home. That history points to the need for a bold new vision of what democracy looks like"-- Provided by publisher.

Rogers, William Warren. 2021. Reconstruction Politics in a Deep South State: Alabama, 1865-1874. Tuscaloosa: University of Alabama Press. "Following the end of the Civil War, white Southerners were forced to concede equal rights to former slaves, ushering in a new and ruthless brand of politics. Suddenly, the status and place of some four million ex-slaves dominated the national and regional political dialogue. The Republican Party established itself quickly and powerfully with the participation of a newly freed constituency, firmly aligned against the Democratic Party that had long dictated the governance of the state. Well-heeled planters, merchants, and bankers, joined by yeoman farmers, gravitated strongly to the Democratic Party and its unabashedly white supremacist measures, staging a counterrevolution. The ensuing power struggle in the birthplace of the Confederacy is at the heart of Reconstruction Politics in a Deep South State: Alabama, 1865-1874"-- Provided by publisher.

Rupp, Robert O. 2020. The Primary That Made a President : John F. Kennedy and West Virginia First ed. Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press. "This book examines an enigma: How did a small Appalachian state, overwhelmingly poor and Protestant, become a key player in the political future of John F. Kennedy? While the primary proved to be an unpredictable campaign boost for JFK, the 1960 West Virginia contest also brought to light a host of social issues that would play a part in the overall story of Kennedy and the 1960s. The West Virginia primary meant the end of a taboo that kept the Catholic faith out of American politics; the rise of the primary as a political tool for garnering delegate support; the beginning of a nationwide confrontation with Appalachian stereotypes; and the seeds for what would become Kennedy's War on Poverty"-- Provided by publisher.

Tyner, James A, and Mindy Farmer. 2020. Cambodia and Kent State : In the Aftermath of Nixon's Expansion of the Vietnam War. Kent, Ohio: Kent State University Press. "President Nixon's announcement on April 30, 1970, that US troops were invading neutral Cambodia as part of the ongoing Vietnam War campaign sparked a complicated series of events with tragic consequences on many fronts. In Cambodia, the invasion renewed calls for a government independent of western power and influence, eventually resulting in a civil war and the rise of the Khmer Rouge. Here at home, Nixon's expansion of the war galvanized the long-standing anti-Vietnam War movement, including at Kent State University, leading to the tragic shooting deaths of four students on May 4, 1970. This brief book concisely contextualizes these events, filling a gap in the popular memory of the 1970 shootings and the wider conceptions of the war in Southeast Asia. In three succinct chapters, James A. Tyner and Mindy Farmer provide background on the decade of activism around the United States that preceded the events on Kent State's campus, an overview of Cambodia's history and developments following the US incursion, and a closing section on historical memory-poignantly tying together the subject matter of the preceding chapters. As we grapple with the legacy of the Kent State shootings, Tyner and Farmer assert, we should also grapple with the larger context of the protests, of the decision to bomb and invade a neutral country, and the violence and genocide that followed"-- Provided by publisher.
