Bahnson, Bahne. “Thru-Hiking the Appalachian Trail: Examining Opportunities for Learning on a Continuous 2,185-Mile Self Supported Hike.” Ed.D diss. 181 pages. University of St. Thomas (Minnesota), 2015. This study explored transformational learning and thru-hiker culture on the Appalachian Trail, employing autoethnography as research methodology within the qualitative research tradition. Themes associated with transformational learning include compassion, community, and simplicity. The researcher explored thru-hiker culture by hiking the complete Appalachian Trail for five months, involving a 2,185 mile journey experienced as a continuous “flip-flop” hike. Personal observations through daily blog posts and weekly newspaper articles were collected and used to critically reflect on the experience, a process integral to transformational adult learning and to achieving an understanding of thru-hiker culture. The study reveals A.T. thru-hiker culture through a description of the experience, knowledge gained from critical reflection on the experience, and the role of physical and psychological challenge on the emerging self.

Borchard, Kimberly C. 2021. Appalachia As Contested Borderland of the Early Modern Atlantic, 1528-1715. Medieval and Renaissance Texts and Studies, Volume 574. Tempe, Arizona: Arizona Center for Medieval & Renaissance Studies. This monograph explores the European obsession with Appalachian mineral resources during the years between 1528 and 1715, reframing Appalachian history within the fields of Latin American, early American, and Atlantic history. While political activists have long decried the cultural and economic marginalization of Appalachia in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Appalachia has similarly been excluded from the study of colonial expansion, transatlantic conflict, and slavery in the early modern Atlantic world.

Flatley, Elizabeth D. “Our Forever Home: Loss of Place and Shale Gas Development in Western Pennsylvania.” Ph.D. diss. 180 pages. Temple University, 2015. The Marcellus Shale lies beneath most of Pennsylvania as well as portions of Ohio, West Virginia, New York, and Maryland, holding one of the world’s largest natural gas reserves. The Marcellus is a sizeable gas reservoir, but until the recent development of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, it had not been economically feasible to exploit it. These unconventional drilling methods currently used in Pennsylvania and other Marcellus regions are deeply controversial. The result has been great scientific and public uncertainty over the risks and rewards of Marcellus Shale development. This dissertation explores the Marcellus Shale development in Western Pennsylvania and its impact on the social lives of residents and the ways in which residents respond.

Klein, Vanessa Ann. “The Nature of Nature: Space, Place, and Identity on the Appalachian Trail.” Ph.D. diss. 311 pages. Kent State University, 2015. The purpose of this study was to examine people’s experiences with nature using thru-hikers on the Appalachian Trial as the focus of the study. This study seeks to understand how experiences in nature impact place-making and are in turn affected by place. Study participants were asked to engage in an intense nature experience connected with significant experiences in their lives, how they connect with nature, what their construction of nature is, and how they generate knowledge during an informal nature experience. A naturalistic inquiry methodology was selected to explore how Appalachian Trail thru-hikers experience and connect to nature; what prior nature experiences and formative influences led them to undertake a long-term outdoor experience; and the relationships between space, place, identity and power.

Le Feuvre, Pharoah, and International Energy Agency. 2020. Sustainable Bioenergy for Georgia : A Roadmap. Paris: IEA Publications. An overview of the prevailing institutional framework related to bioenergy and associated policies opens this roadmap, followed by a description of the wider context of bioenergy supply and consumption in Georgia. The body of the roadmap focuses on: Ensuring sustainable biomass supplies Modernising the consumption of biomass. Current Georgian practices are summarised for these two areas, and examples of international best practices in bioenergy from IEA member countries are offered. The roadmap then outlines the policies, technologies and management practices needed for Georgia to harness its biomass potential securely and sustainably. These are presented as a set of overarching policy actions, underpinned by detailed biomass supply and consumption recommendations. The recommended actions are compiled as a co-ordinated package of measures to be implemented during 2020-25 to modernise Georgia's bioenergy industry and make it sustainable by 2030. The social, economic and environmental benefits for the country are summarised as a vision of Georgia's modern bioenergy industry in 2030.
Merriam, Eric Richard. “Cumulative Effects Modeling in the Mountaintop Removal Mining Region of the Central Appalachians.” Ph.D. diss. 171 pages. West Virginia University, 2015. Anthropogenic alteration of natural land cover is a global driver of aquatic resource impairment. Increasingly, there is recognition that aquatic systems are impacted by multiple land use activities that combine additively and interactively to result in unique patterns of degradation. Moreover, stream networks are multi-scaled, hierarchically structured systems wherein localized impacts can have both local and regional consequences. Thus, there has been a recent push to construct statistical models capable of predicting and forecasting aquatic conditions under current and future land use scenarios and characterize local and regional processes dictating observed patterns of ecological degradation. Nowhere is there a greater need for decisive and empirically-driven aquatic resource management than within the Mountaintop Removal-Valley Fill (MTR-VF) mining region of the central Appalachians, where dramatic changes in land cover associated with large scale surface mining can produce strong measurable impacts to downstream ecosystems.
Miller, Eric Mitchell. “Evaluating and Prioritizing Stream Restoration in Mined Appalachian Watersheds”. Ph.D. diss. 141 pages. West Virginia University, 2015. The state of West Virginia requires stream mitigation to offset anthropogenic impacts to streams; consequently, there is a high concentration of mitigation projects in the mountaintop mining/valley fill region. Projects are typically outside mine boundaries and sites are selected at the discretion of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. This dissertation evaluated current in-stream, natural channel design (NCD) structures and prioritized future project locations.

Witt, Joseph D. Religion and Resistance in Appalachia: Faith and the Fight against Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining (Place Matters New Direction Appal Stds). 274 pages. University Press of Kentucky (October 28, 2016). Joseph D. Witt examines the ways religious and environmental ethics foster resistance to mountaintop removal coal mining. Drawing on extensive interviews with activists, teachers, preachers, and community leaders, Witt's research offers a fresh analysis of an important and dynamic topic. His study reflects a diversity of denominational perspectives, exploring Catholic and mainline Protestant views of social and environmental justice; evangelical Christian readings of biblical ethics as well as native and nontraditional spiritual traditions. Witt's work also provides new outlooks on the future of the region and its inhabitants by placing Appalachian resistance to mountaintop removal in a comparative international context. His timely study enhances, challenges, and advances conversations not only about the region, but also about the relationship between religion and environmental activism.
